Everything You Need to Know About Living in South Loop

South Loop Neighborhood View

The South Loop neighborhood is a dynamic mix of new properties and Chicago history. Located just south of the business district, there are two main areas of the South Loop neighborhood: Museum Park and Printer’s Row. Museum Park is a lakefront community of new high-rise buildings close to Soldier Field and Chicago’s museum campus that includes the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium. The historic Printer’s Row features many buildings that used to be printing plants and publishing houses and now have been converted into condos and lofts. Residents living in Chicago’s South Loop can enjoy trendy restaurants, boutiques, and the close proximity to the Loop.

Things to Do in South Loop

The South Loop neighborhood is just steps away from Chicago’s museum campus. Enjoy The Field Museum of Natural History and take a look at science and history across time. Explore the dinosaurs in the Evolving Planet exhibit or peak into Ancient Egypt with mummies. The Adler Planetarium is a public museum dedicated to the study of astronomy and astrophysics. Travel the depths of powerful black holes or to the heights of Voyager 1. You can stroll through the Shedd Aquarium and find 32,600 of species of sea life. Experience a one-of-a-kind tour such as shark feedings, penguin encounters, or even the chance to be a “Trainer for a Day.”

Once you’re done exploring the museums, you can walk through Grant Park which sits on the scenic lakefront parklands. With 319 acres of grass and recreational fields, Grant Park is known as “Chicago’s front yard”. This area plays host to major city events such as Taste of Chicago, Lollapalooza, and Chicago Blues Festival. Also in the warmer months, locals can enjoy 12th Street Beach. Beachgoers can spread out a towel on the sand or take a swim in Lake Michigan. The outdoor activities in the South Loop are endless. Thankfully, when the Chicago winters begin to roll in, South Loop is also home to top restaurants and bars.

South Loop Restaurants

If the weather is not cooperating for festivals or the beach, South Loop is full of tasty and unique restaurants. Looking for a top breakfast and brunch spot? Check out the South Loop location of The Bongo Room. Enjoy fresh seasonal dishes in a unique way. The outrageous pancakes (like the chocolate and caramel pretzel) and French toast are the local favorites. More of a donut fan? The traditional but reinvented donuts at Stan’s Donuts will sweeten your day. They are baked throughout the day to give each customer a fresh treat. For lunch, we would recommend Chicago’s legendary deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s. This pizzeria was instrumental in developing the recipe for Chicago-style pizza and has become one of the Chicago area’s best-known pizza restaurants. If you are looking for something lighter, you can check out Eleven City Diner. This deli serves up savory sandwiches in a traditional diner setting. For a nicer sit-down dinner option, check out Victory Tap. This local South Loop restaurant is known for a cozy atmosphere serving Italian hearty classics. Or just stop in for a cocktail at their huge carved wooden bar. There are plenty of excellent options in South Loop for eating unique meals or the Chicago classics.

Best South Loop Bars

When locals are looking to wind down their week, South Loop is the perfect location. The South Loop neighborhood is home to some of the city’s best nightlife. While there are countless bars in South Loop, we narrowed it down to some of our favorites. Vice District Brewing Company is a neighborhood craft beer destination. They offer small batch, hand-crafted beer and allow patrons to bring their own food in from local restaurants. Kasey’s Tavern is Chicago’s second oldest tavern and located at 701 South Dearborn. This sports-bar pairs its TVs with a top-shelf beer list. Another favorite is The Scout. This rustic watering hole has a long beer list, souped-up pub grub, and lots of TVs & patio seating. It’s the perfect destination to sit back and watch a game.
