What is the Loop in Chicago

The heart and soul of Chicago is located right in the Loop neighborhood. On the west the Chicago River sits, Michigan Avenue is on the east, Wacker Drive on the north, and then Congress Parkway is on the south, making it the perfect location to experience Chicago to the fullest.

The Loop is Chicago’s official downtown area and the second largest downtown business district in the United States. Its home to some of the country’s largest corporations such as IBM, Boeing, Wrigley, and The Tribune company. If you’re standing in the Loop and look up, you’ll see famous skyscrapers and historic buildings that boast architectural creativity and experimentation.

The name given to the neighborhood has an interesting history and has puzzled Chicagoans for years. The “Loop” actually comes from the route of a streetcar that served Chicago in the 1880’s. The concept of the streetcar was then extended to system of elevated rail tracks for rapid transit lines that connected downtown with the neighborhoods, what we know today as the “L”. With trains running all throughout the city but connecting through the Loop, a central hub was created.

Not only is the Loop the central business district in Chicago, it is also home to some of the city’s top attractions. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite things to do in the Loop.

Chicago Cultural Center

A creative epicenter for free art exhibitions, dance and theatre events, films, and much more, the Chicago Cultural Center celebrates the humanities of the diverse city. Experience the breathtaking architectural features of this historic building on a free guided architecture tour. You’ll get a chance to see the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome as well as rooms featuring marble arches and crown molding.

Chicago Riverwalk

Completed and introduced in 2016, the Chicago Riverwalk hopes to turn the waterfront into a recreational destination. It features lush greenery, floating gardens, skyline views, and comfy chairs. You’ll also find several vendors on 1.25 mile pedestrian strip. Grab a glass of wine at City Winery or an island-inspired drink at the Island Party Hut.

Chicago Athletic Association

The Chicago Athletic Association is the quintessential attraction for Chicago history. The art of competition originated here and that is still emanated through the halls. Home to seven of the city’s best establishments, you’ll never run out of things to do here. Cindy’s Rooftop is one of Chicago’s most popular terraces because of the panoramic views of the lake. There will surely be a line, so check out the Game Room while you wait and play some old-school pool.

The Loop is one of the most interesting areas to live in Chicago. Check out these Loop apartments today and start your new life in Chicago’s hub.
