Tucked away where the lake meets the river, Lakeshore East is Chicago’s hidden gem.
Because of its remarkable closeness to the city’s central business district in the Loop, shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities, Lakeshore East is one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago.
Lakeshore East features several of the tallest buildings in Chicago. The overall development, park, and several of the individual buildings have won awards for architecture and urban planning. The buildings are for various types of residential use such as condominiums, apartments, or hotels. Perfect for dog owners and families alike, this neighborhood isn’t one to miss.
History of Lakeshore East
Early in the 19th Century, Lakeshore East was a busy port for shipping goods from the Great Lakes to a port in New Orleans. After World War II, the rail yards turned vacant for several years. This is when the Lakeshore East neighborhood was used as a 9-hole golf course, which was completed in 1994 and closed in 2001.
The area was then planned for development with one main challenge; integrate the development to the inherited triple-level street system while still creating a visually attractive and friendly neighborhood. The solution was to stagger ground-level amenities and building entrances from the upper level at the perimeter to the lower level at the interior. The redevelopment of this land was targeted for 2013. This is truly one of the newest neighborhoods in Chicago.
Lakeshore East is about 40% green, with an abundance of open space, including a 6-acre botanical recreational park. Lakeshore East is now a 28-acre community of surrounding luxury apartment rentals, downtown condominiums, and townhomes. Because the area is tucked into an enclave next to Michigan Avenue and west of Lakeshore Drive, apartments in Lakeshore East offer unbeatable convenience and comfort.
Spend a Day in Lakeshore East
The Lakeshore East neighborhood is filled with outdoor entertainment. Take a walk over to Millennium Park and enjoy the iconic public art such as “The Bean” or the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the Crown Fountain, and the Lurie Garden. The park has received awards for its accessibility and green design. Because the park sits atop a parking garage and the commuter rail Millennium Station, it is considered the world’s largest rooftop garden.
Maggie Daley Park is another must-see public park of Chicago. This 20-acre park is named in honor of Maggie Daley, the former first lady of the city who died of cancer in 2011. The park features a cancer survivors garden, climbing wall, fieldhouse, mini golf, picnic groves, play garden, skating ribbon, and tennis courts as well as a variety of programs and events.
The River Chicago Walk is a new addition to Chicago and the Lakeshore East neighborhood. Since its opening in 2016, the 1.25-mile Riverwalk has been a bustling hub of activity, offering a variety of venues and spaces for residents and visitors to eat, drink, and relax.
