Neighborhood Update: South Loop

As we wrap up the summer festival season and the endless happenings at Grant Park in the South Loop, we’re ushering in the fall with tailgating at Solider Field and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October. Needless to say, the hype in this neighborhood is justified.

The South Loop has been on a steady upward trajectory for the last 10 years and with multiple new apartment buildings under construction like 1000 S. Clark, 1001 S. State, 1333 S. Wabash and the recently completed luxury loft building, The Fairfax, there is no shortage of residents who need to eat, drink, entertain and shop. The neighborhood will become even more popular, as the River South mega-development officially begins construction of 2,700 new units along the Chicago River between Roosevelt and Harrison.

One of the hottest spots in the South Loop right now is Acadia. Insider tip: Go early with a friend, sit at the bar and split the burger and lobster roll while sipping on few signature craft cocktails. Just up the street is Eleven City Diner, where you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the Matzo Ball Soup and Pastrami on Rye will have you coming back over and over again. Take a stroll up Michigan Ave. and you’ll find Iron Chef Jose Garces’ absolutely gorgeous Mercat a la Planxa. This is a great place to take friends and family since it’s tapas style and makes for a very unique and interactive dining experience.

There are new places popping up all the time, and one of the coolest spots right now is Vice District Taproom, which is a craft brewery featuring countless ales, stouts and IPAs. If you’re looking to spend one, two or six hours hanging out watching football, there’s no lack of places to kick back while checking your fantasy stats. The Scout, Kroll’s and Wabash Tap have awesome food, drinks and tons of TVs.

The history—literally—of the South Loop is also what makes it so appealing. The museum campus, which includes the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History, all offer entire days of learning and exploring. And the best part is they offer free admission for Illinois residents on select dates, so make sure to get your new ID as soon as you move into your new home.

The South Loop is just going to continue to grow as major developments like the DePaul University basketball arena, Marriott hotel, and the beautification of Roosevelt Rd from State St. to Indiana. Current and future residents have plenty to discover, as there seems to be no shortage of new and unique establishments popping up all over the neighborhood.
