Meet the Thompson Center: Google’s New Chicago HQ

In a city as historic as Chicago, landmarks are hardly in short supply. But there’s always been something wonderfully unmistakable about the Thompson Center. Designed by celebrated architect Helmut Jahn, the stunning, glass-wrapped building has long been one of The Loop’s most recognizable landmarks.

Now, it’s getting a pretty exciting second act. Google plans to move roughly 2,000 Chicago employees into the renovated Thompson Center in 2027, preserving signature features like its soaring atrium while updating the building with more natural light, greenery, outdoor space, and modern offices. If you haven’t seen the plans yet, they’re absolutely worth a look — the transformation is gorgeous.

The ground floor is getting some attention, too, with plans for restaurants, retail, and public gathering space, all of which should make the Thompson Center feel like even more of a destination.

The Best Part About Google Moving to the Loop

For employees, one of the biggest perks may simply be the location. The Thompson Center sits directly above the Clark/Lake CTA station, where six ‘L’ lines come together, making it remarkably easy to reach from neighborhoods across Chicago.

And if you live downtown, you may be able to skip transit altogether. The Riverwalk, Millennium Park, Theater District, restaurants, coffee shops, and plenty of after-work spots are all nearby.

That puts Google employees in a pretty enviable position: you can live close enough to walk to work while still having some of the best parts of downtown Chicago right outside the office.
