River North remains one of the most popular Chicago neighborhoods. If you are looking to enjoy all of the perks of city living, consider making one of the River North Apartment buildings home.

The River North Neighborhood

As the Windy City’s fastest and largest growing neighborhood, River North has become a hub for young professionals, art lovers, and foodies. The vibrant area boasts incredible dining, activities, and living.

The neighborhood offers a premier location, west of Michigan Avenue, south of Chicago Avenue, and bordered by the Chicago River branches.

With the “L” train and multiple bus routes serving the area, getting around and out of the neighborhood is not a problem. There are also plenty of Divvy stations throughout the area, providing residents and visitors access to bike rentals.

The River North neighborhood is known for its impressive architecture, including the historic Merchandise Mart, one of the most infamous designs.

River North Dining

You’ll never run out of restaurant options in River North. The area is jam-packed with plenty of choices on every street, from exquisite fine dining to casual local joints.

Enjoy an upscale meal at one of the many River North steakhouses, including RPM Steak, Bavette’s Bar and Boeuf, Kinzie Chophouse, and Chicago Cut Steakhouse

For delicious International cuisine, try Ema, for Mediterranean small plates, or Sunda for modern Asian fusion. Frontera Grill features tasty and creative Mexican fare in a vibrant space.

If you’re really on a time crunch, swing through the Portillo’s drive-through for a classic Italian Beef or grab a mouth-watering burger, cheesy fries, and chocolate shake from Shake Shack.

Art Galleries to Visit in River North

River North is home to the largest concentration of art galleries in the United States after Manhattan.

The art district is centered around the intersection of Franklin and Superior Streets and bounded by Wells, Chicago, Orleans, and Huron Streets. Around these streets, you can find plenty of unique and creative galleries.

Over recent years construction of new high rises in River North has replaced former art galleries, but you can still find plenty of options dispersed throughout the neighborhood.

Here are a few of the neighborhood’s must-visit galleries:

  • Addington Gallery: Located right on Wells Street, this contemporary gallery has specialized in impressive mixed media pieces and paintings made with hot wax for over twenty years.
  • Carl Hammer Gallery: This gallery, also on Wells Street, boasts incredible pieces of work from self-taught American and European artists.
  • Andrew Bae Gallery: For a unique cultural experience, stop by this quiet gallery on Superior Street to explore incredible pieces created by modern artists connected with China, Korea, and Japan.
  • Jean Albano Gallery: If you’re interested in cutting-edge and creative contemporary art, this gallery is a must-see. Jean Albano represents both emerging and established artists through various mediums, including painting, sculptures, and mixed media.

Events Happening in River North

While things look a bit different right now with COVID-19, River North is known for its exciting events and activities.

With multiple venues throughout the neighborhood, many concerts and shows take place here. Big-name performers have taken the stage at the House of Blues, while thousands of classical music concerts have happened at St. James Cathedral.

During St. Patrick’s Day, River North residents have a front-row seat to watch the Chicago River dyed green. The whole neighborhood, and visitors, come to celebrate this lucky holiday.

The Taste of River North is a popular food and culture festival that showcases the best of the neighborhood. Along with bites from local restaurants, you can find local vendors and live music throughout the entire event.

River North During the Holidays

There’s nothing like strolling through the streets of River North to get you in the holiday spirit.

Bundle up and check out the streets and buildings lined with colorful Christmas lights and decorations. Even the “L’ train is elaborately decorated with lights, bows, and candy-cane stripes.  On your walk, be sure to grab a Mexican hot chocolate from XOCO or an Instagram-worthy treat from BomboBar.

There are also plenty of fabulous shops throughout the neighborhood where you can get in all of your Christmas shopping. Don’t miss out on walking down the magical Magnificent Mile, especially during the holidays.
