Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day Chicago Style
Chicagoans have suffered through a long, difficult winter, which guarantees we are in for a lively spring. When the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations begin this weekend, you can bet that 2014 will be one for the record books. Our fabulous city offers events for everyone- no matter how many Guinness drafts are involved.
Saturday morning kicks off with our most well-known ritual, the dyeing of the Chicago River. At the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, 45 pounds of eco-friendly dye are poured into the river. This emerald transformation lasts about five hours, so don’t miss the chance to see the Chicago River in rare form.
Next up is the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which will be lead by Grand Marshall, John McDonough, President & CEO of the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. The parade starts at Balbo and Columbus and proceeds north through Millennium Park to end at Monroe. Viewers along the route can expect colorful floats, Irish step dancers, bagpipers, and marching bands.
For some people, the biggest decision of the day will be selecting a bustling Irish pub to claim a spot in. Fortunately, we have a lot of choices throughout Chicago’s neighborhoods. Here are a few recommendations:
River North: Fado at 100 W. Grand Ave.
Doors open early for European sports at 7am with a full brunch menu until 11am and a special St. Patrick’s Day menu for the rest of the day. Fado boasts live music all day with Nappertandy, Shannon Rovers Bag Pipers, and Diver.
Old Town: Declan’s Irish Pub at 1240 N. Wells St.
Running from 8:30am to 11:30pm, Declan’s Irish Pub will be hosting their “Top of the Morning Party.” Tickets will include entertainment from bagpipers in kilts, green beer, specialty cocktails and an impressive brunch buffet.
The Loop: The Gage at 24 S. Michigan Ave.
Enjoy live music from the Fiddling Finnegans and dig in to some delicious, traditional Irish fare from The Gage’s St. Patrick’s Day menu, which includes recommended beer pairings.
Lincoln Park: McGee’s Tavern & Grille at 950 W. Webster Ave.
Start Saturday off right McGee’s Tavern, where Irish traditions come first. The morning meal package provides a huge Irish breakfast, green beer, mimosas and screwdrivers.
