Arena districts have done wonders for underutilized metropolitan areas like Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Arena and The Staples Center in Los Angeles, and with the recent announcement of a new, state-of-the-art office facility connected to Chicago’s United Center, this could be the beginning of another surge in development. This would spark even more world-class restaurants, high-end bars, and West Loop apartments.

Scheduled to break ground this spring, the Blackhawks and Bulls are not only getting a high-tech workspace for its 300 employees, visitors and fans will also be able to buy team merchandise at a brand-new 10,000 sq. ft. retail store inside the United Center. The mixed-use building is taking the idea of the United Center as the sole entertainment venue, and illuminating the possibilities of the future.

One of the biggest moves will be relocating the Michael Jordan statue inside the facility’s atrium, while the statues of Blackhawks Hall of Famers Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita will remain outside. Thousands of sports fans will soon have a new vantage point for photos of Chicago’s most famous stars.

As downtown development moves further west, the project at The United Center could be the catalyst for more luxury West Loop apartments like Warren Ashland Place, which is currently renting for immediate move-ins and is in very close proximity to the United Center.

Plus, it will add new restaurants, entertainment, and retail to round out the surrounding area, connecting it with already established venues like bellyQ and City Winery. With the Ashland & Lake Green/Pink line L stop just steps away, it’s just a matter of time.
