Art-Chi-Tecture: Top 5 Chicago Instagram Accounts

Instagram, as so eloquently parodied in the “Look at this Instagram” music video (Google it), essentially showcases food, fingernails, clouds and selfies in the bathroom, all in the name of art. However, the architecture subculture of Instagram has been thriving for several years with some accounts like @Le_Blanc, with nearly 150,000 followers, and is allowing iPhonographers to take everyday glass, steel and concrete and turn it into something visually interesting and thought-provoking.

Chicago was at the forefront of this counterculture and has developed ever-evolving groups like @IgersChicago, @Chitecture and @arkirormantix_Chicago which have been getting people together to help push and promote seemingly limitless photographic possibilities throughout the city. They help to inspire and keep what has become a very tight-knit community together, and it’s free global advertising for our beautiful city.

Other than our top-of-the-line Instagram account (@luxurylivingchicago), here are 5 really solid Chicago-based architecture users to follow:

@GregFoster

Greg’s monochromatic gallery is beautiful to look it by itself, but viewing each photo showcases stunning minimalism, perfect framing and unique perspectives that usually force you to look deeper to see what’s actually happening. The muted colors and subtle hue-shifts have a calming effect, which some could call a Zen gallery.

@Chitecture

This account was one of the original “feature” accounts in Chicago, and scrolling back through nearly 2000 photos, you can really see the evolution of styles and creativity this genre has produced over the years. Also, as this account only posts features, you’ll be introduced to many of Chicago’s best of the best.

@80degrees

As you scroll back through this gallery, you will see endless squares of distinctive framing, beautiful color and just a subtle and gorgeous eye for taking something you may see every single day, but capturing its beauty in such a singular way that you have to stop and take a second and third look to truly appreciate it.

@Nick_Ulivieri

Nick has been capturing Chicago in such a way the Illinois Office of Tourism should just post ads that say, “Check out these photos then buy a plane ticket to Chicago.” The array of landscapes, stunning night shots and skyline are so effortless and beautiful, and there are a few perspectives of the city that most humans don’t get to see (from a helicopter).

@Thara_Photo

Tim is another mainstay in the Chicago Instagram scene, and his gallery has more of a shoot-from-the-hip vibe, capturing Chicago through a lens that’s truly his own. Among the many diverse and extraordinary photo styles (skylines, reflections, streetscapes) his ability to capture a singular focal point is out of this world.
