The pulse of Chicago beats out of the Loop neighborhood, situated between the Chicago River and Congress Parkway. Not only will you find the second largest business district in the country here, but you’ll find an abundance of entertainment, dining, and community activities in the Loop that make living in Chicago even better.

What is the Loop in Chicago?

The Loop is Chicago’s official downtown area and has a notable business district that houses names like IBM, Boeing, Wrigley, and The Tribune company. If you look up, you’ll find beautiful skyscrapers and creative architectural elements. The Willis Tower, one of America’s tallest buildings, towers over the Loop at 110 stories tall. Check out the Skydeck for awe-inspiring views of the city and four other states.

The Loop’s unique name stems from the route that a Chicago streetcar served in the 1880’s. As technology advanced, the streetcar concept was then extended into a system of elevated rail track that we knows today as the, “L”. The L continues to serve as a central hub for Chicagoans today.

If you find yourself in the Loop one day, it’s worth checking some of the amazing attractions that are home to the neighborhood. The Chicago Cultural Center is a creative epicenter for the arts. It also has the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome as well as other architectural marvels. On a sunny day, the Chicago Riverwalk is a must. Go for a walk down the pedestrian path, grab a glass rosé at City Winery, and kick back in the sun. You can end your day at the Chicago Athletic Association where you can choose from seven establishments. Cindy’s provides stunning lake views and the Game Room is a great place to play old-fashioned games with friends.

What It’s Like Living in the Loop

In the Loop, you can find beautiful skyscrapers such as The Nuveen building and the Boeing Building while also looking at historic buildings such as the Merchandise Mart. This explains the Loop perfectly as being both a modern and historic hub.

As a business hub, the Loop attracts professionals from all over the city. But, after work all these Chicagoans look for somewhere to play. Check out Raised Rooftop at the Renaissance Hotel for impressive River views and a cozy seat. You can also head over to River Roast. This restaurant serves up some of the best meats in Chicago as well as the best views.

Living in the Loop also makes the rest of the city easily accessible. You can check out other neighborhoods when you take the “L” out of one of the many CTA stops in the area. You can also find an abundance of grocery stores in the area such as Jewel Osco, Target, Walgreens, and Marianos.

Things to Do in the Loop

From shopping, nightlife, dining, and entertainment, you can find just about everything in the Loop. For a little bit of fine art, head over to the Art Institute or the Chicago Theatre. At the Art Institute you can find over 300,000 pieces of world-renowned art. The Chicago Theatre is home to shows such as Hamilton, Kinky Boots, Book of Mormon, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Have a drink after work at one of the Loop’s bars. The Berghoff is a city gem and holds Chicago’s very first liquor license. Or, if you want something more upscale, try Vol. 39 for a finely crafted cocktail.

The restaurant scene in the Loop is notable. Revival Food Hall will give you an endless variety of options. From barbecue, to smoothies, to bakery items, this upscale cafeteria can cure all of your cravings. The Dearborn in the Loop is also a great option, especially if you’re looking for American fare. They offer a great burger and a welcoming atmosphere.

After getting past the retail chains like Zara and Target, you can find some unique boutiques in the Loop. If you’re in the market for a special item that you won’t find anywhere else, head over to Optimo Hats. Or, you can go to Merz Apothecary for luxury skin care and fragrances.
